Getting ready to head out for walks!

At long last autumn is on the horizon. I adore it. Especially when we get the Indian summer we are having now. It’s the perfect time of year to get outside, you can go for long walks and climbs without being exhausted or suffering from heat exhaustion before you’ve gone 100 yards. I’m planning on exploring parts of the South Downs out to seas that I haven’t yet covered. A friend and I are planning on taking in day long walks but really what do you take on these?

Well from my personal experience these are my top five:

1: A secure, comfortable bag. If you’re planning on going more than a half hour stroll you need to ensure you have a good quality backpack which doesn’t leave anything digging in or rubbing in your back.

2: A lightweight waterproof. Preferably one which will fit into the back of your pack and will breath in case of showers. Last thing you want to be is a damp on the inside as you are on the out!

3: Fluids. Water is great for being hydrated but when you sweat you also loose mineral and salts. Water will keep you hydrated but you need something a little more to stay in top condition. If you don’t fancy adding a sports powder to your drink then make sure you pack some salty snacks like pretzels to keep your electrolytes up.

4: First aid kit & extras. A first aid kit is superb, you can get some great little ones which won’t weight you down but also remember to take sun cream and one thing we never go for a walk without – duct tape. It has been a huge help on numerous occasions when a sole of a boot has pulled away or a bag has got caught and started to rip.

5: A decent pair of trail shoes! The amount of times I’ve gone for walks with friends only for their walk to result in blisters as they’ve come in trainers or stylish shoes not suitable for more than a walk around a park.

Obviously this is for a walk out in the countryside as opposed to a stroll around but theres nothing better than getting out, breathing in that fresh air and just enjoying the marvels of the countryside!
