Big Works Dump Truck

Last year saw Tomy launch a new range. The Big Works range! Made up of a range of vehicles including a rubbish collection lorry, a cement mixer and a dump truck they are aimed at children from 3-8 years.

We’ve been sent the Dump Truck for the boys to play and review and they adore it. I wondered at first due to the size (it takes after its name – big) would put them off but if anything they love it more. Big Works seem to have got it right from the packaging out. I couldn’t get a clear photo because the boys ripped into this as soon as it arrived. But the packaging makes up part of a play scene so their imaginations are active the second they have the toy in their hand! One thing I must say while mentioning the size is that while large it isn’t heavy! Size is 61 x 30 x 16 cm

The truck has real working action with both doors opening up full (and perfect fitting for either a duplo driver or playmobil) There is considerable detail throughout the truck from inside the cab to underneath. The cab and the details under the lorry are very realistic and all to scale. A fact which my eldest really likes as does the husband. Along with the steering wheel moving when the truck turns the mirrors on either side are also adjustable. The back tips up and empties as you’ll shortly see. It comes with working lights and sounds worked by discrete buttons on the top. It requires 3x AAA batteries but these are already included so the truck is ready to be played with immediately. (RRP £34.99)

The boys immediately filled it up with large Duplo blocks and drove it round before tipping it up when they needed to be built. I was surprised but how much my 7 year old got involved with the play too. After it was played with solely on its own it now takes part in an awful lot of stories and adventures the boys are having and has been used to move stuff around the garden this weekend as we cleared up. It has also been used to take plates and bowls out to the kitchen after dinner – thank heavens for plastic and Dettol wipes!

They have used the truck when playing separately in very different ways and I love this about it. It has great play value and is adaptive to different ages and ability. While expensive compared to some trucks I think the detail goes a long way to separate it from bright chunky plastic trucks!
