Stevens Cornish Slate

I adore Cornwall which if you’re a regular reader you’ll know and one of my most favourite things about this beautiful county is the slate. It’s on the roofs, it’s on all the national trusts we visits, it’s even down at the beaches. Slate is incredibly beautiful when its wet. The patterns and shades which make it up are amazing. And needless to say it takes a great deal of skill to work with slate. It splinters easily and it takes a lot of care to work it. However it is the cooking industry highly though of too. It doesn’t “bleed” flavours so you have no cross contamination which also makes it perfect for one particular item of food – Cheese!

Amazingly you can have a stinky piece of cheese right next to a mild and creamy Brie and the flavours wont mix. But where to get them? Well we were sent from StevensCornish Slate Company and amazing piece of art. A gorgeous cheese tray with handles. The photos by the way don’t do this piece justice!

We have used it a couple of times for cheeses and I have also carried out a lot of cakes and mince pies on it. It’s an incredibly beautiful tray sealed so the colours of the slate just ooze through. If you take a look at Stevens website you’ll see each piece is hand crafted with the slate and makes some of the most incredible pieces. I adore the clocks as well. Let alone the plates (which I am saving up for now!)
Each piece is bespoke and worked to bring the best of the slate out. I have seen a fair few items made of slate and while they are lovely and rustic none of them have the elegance and beauty Stevens show. Just head of to their store now and just check some of the beautiful examples out.

Started by Pat & Ann, who really are a lovely pair, they use reclaimed Delabole Slate and are a member of the Made in Cornwall so you know you’re getting the true Cornish Slate. I cannot recommend this team highly enough. They have gone the extra mile for me and have been delightful throughout! This has been one of those reviews I’ve pondered hard over to try and explain and give them item sent justice. I don’t think I have and can only say head over and chat to them! They’re on twitter too here and on facebook. Go and say hi!
