Getting Your Home Autumn Ready
It’s that time of year when we favour our
blankets over our shorts and turn to hot chocolate instead of something
stronger for our ideal night in. With autumn officially here, its time to make
our homes a cosy haven that we look forward to coming back to after a cold day.
In terms of design, there is one trend that has hugely taken off recently and
is perfect for your home all year round. Originating from Denmark, the Hygge
look has massively taken over the design world thanks to its gorgeously
simplistic look incorporating warm, soft textures in a neutral palette. The
word Hygge doesn't have an exact English translation but can be summarised by
enjoying the simple things. The Hygge look doesn’t need extravagant expensive accessories,
it instead works with layers textures for a comfortable and stripped back look.
You can easily get this look in your own home by following a few clever tips
and tricks.
Rugs
One of the easiest ways to take your first
step in the Hygge look is by using a rug. In terms of practicality, rugs are a
great way of adding literal warmth to your floor to help insulate and trap heat
in your home. But more than this, they bring a beautiful texture with them that
can kick-start your cosy home. With this in mind, a shaggy rug would be your
best bet to get that Hygge look. The shaggy rug lives up to its name thanks to
the longer pile length. The longer the pile length, the longer and thicker the
material is. Shaggy rugs give you the instant texture required of the Hygge
trend, plus, they feel great underfoot which means you can walk about in your
fluffy socks on the winter evenings with ease. Alternatively, a sheepskin rug is a
fantastic option. Sheepskin rugs tend to be smaller in size with a softer
underside meaning you can use them of your floors but also draped over the back
of a sofa for that gorgeous build up on layers.
Colours
As mentioned earlier, the Hygee look
focuses on using a neutral palette. This is easily achieved since neutral
colours have been homeowners firm favourites for more than a decade now. Think
of off whites, creams, beiges, delicate blues and greys with warm undertones.
These colours promote that calm, tranquil atmosphere and are therefore ideal
for Hygege homes. Try to keep this at the forefront of your mind when it comes
to shopping for your perfect rug as these palettes give you an authentic finishing
aesthetic.
Accessories
While a rug is your key piece of furniture
for the Hygge look, it is a combination of all of the little things that give
you that stunning look at the end of it. When it comes to bed or sofas, think
of using fluffy, knitted and textured cushions coupled with big blankets to
give that inviting and warm feeling. If you want to hang art or photos use
natural wood frames and arrange these in a disorganised fashion to give a
relaxed yet balanced appearance. This works particularly well with white or
darker walls as they offset each other nicely and bring an equilibrium to the
room. As well as this, try to use scented candles where you can. This gives
those welcoming aromas and gentle light for ultimate relaxation.
Don’t be fooled - the Hygge look ins’t
just for winter. When the warmer months roll back around, if at all in England,
you can simply adapt your accessories to match the seasons. Pack away those
blankets and candles and replace them with more colourful pieces to achieve a
slightly more Scandi aesthetic in your home. Beautiful and adaptable, Hygge
homes are real interior design winners.
