Make your winter...Cosy!
Since last year when the Danes were voted the happiest people
on earth the word Hygga has taken force. Hygga pronounced hooga is a word the
Danes use for how they remain happy despite their long dark winters. There is
no direct translation for it but it’s the embodiment of all things cosy.
Something which seems in the UK to have been sacrificed for a minimalistic style.
Picture in your head cushions, a lit fire, candle, rugs and
the gentle glow of a lamp. Snuggled up on the sofa with a crackling fire and
friends around for conversation and dinner. So how can you incorporate it into
your home Hygga with a wide variety of gorgeous and simple home accessories.
Lighting
This is a main part of
Hygge. Scandianvian restaurants offer intimate settings and dimmed lights. Light
some soft scented candle, pop on your soft glow lamp and turn the glaring main
light off. Light a fire and warm your feet. Surprisingly this is a huge step to
unwinding and relaxing! Whether you curl up with a good book, a glass of mulled
wine or you invited friends over for long chat. This has far more chance of
putting you and your soul in a happy mood then dressing up and battling to hear
your friends over bar music. One of the leading experts on Hygga points out he
has a candle at his working desk during the day. It helps soften his stress!
Easy no?
Smell
One of our main senses and
the easiest to make happy. Imagine coming home after a day rushing around and
getting cold to the smell of warm cinnamon pastries wafting from the oven. If
you aren’t a natural baker then simple pick up a pack from the shops – you can
buy them in frozen or in the pastry section – ready to pop in the oven to be
devoured on arrival!
Hygga your space
While
hygga is about embracing friends, warmth and the simple joys of life a large
part of it is making your house home. Throw some gorgeous furry blankets, such as this one from Oldrids, on the
sofa, edge away from the creams and neutrals and chuck in colour around the
room even copper accessories will bounce back warm light around the room, fill
your walls with photos or family and loved ones and pictures which make you
smile just to look at.
Get outside
Hygga
is not just about being home. Grab those new throws and fill a flash with hot
chocolate and head out! Take your significant other, your kids, your best
friend and go and star gaze. Just take time to lie back and watch the world. So
many joined in the other night with the hunt for the supermoon but what about
the galaxies and stars? Its amazing just how much life melts away when you’re
warm snuggly and the stars start to tswinkle..
I need more cosy goodness in my life. I've be accumulating throws and slankets, we now even have a fake fire - I was surprised at the mental impact that had, I just warmer just putting it on! I might actually get it on today, it's so grey and miserable out. Lots of good ideas, great post xx
