How to get your kids out about this Easter
Can you believe it’s only 4 days till we
break up for the Easter Holidays? Hasn’t it come around quick this year. We can’t
wait for it to hit here and we can turn off the alarm for a whole two weeks.
What do we do over the holidays? Well here are some great ideas to get you
started. Obviously the most important thing before tackling anything outside at
this time of year is to dress appropriately. Layers and waterproofs are must no
matter how sunny the day starts! Head over to OutdoorLook to get kitted up!
Take a hike.
One of our favourite things to do at this
time of year is to head out on a hike. It’s a stunning beautiful time of year
to explore the countryside and coast lines. Most kids can manage a short hike
and if not there are some great back carriers to take them out with you. The
local Forestry commissions often have special trails set up for the holidays
from Gruffalo hunting to chasing down the Stickman. Our local National Trust
also offers a great Easter Egg hunt trail!
Grow a Garden.
Spring is summed up by flowers and new
growth so take advantage of this and start a flower garden or window herb
garden. Why not look online before you go and get the kids involved in what
colours they’d like to grow and what would be suitable. We’ve gone for easy one
this year and even have Asparagus growing on our window stills. Sunflowers are
all potted up ready for a growing race. But you can choosemany which are quick growers (children don’t normally like waiting a couple
of months) and will have a viewable difference almost daily.
Water.
Whether it’s the beach, river or a lake
there really is nothing better than mucking about in, on or by water. Shove the
wellies and waterproofs on and head out. Whether it’s making a dam in the
river, jam jar fishing for shrimps, pooh sticks or building sand castles Easter
is the perfect time and weather to get out. Take a picnic and see where their
imagination takes them.
Museums.
No longer the boring stuffy unchild
friendly places they were when we were younger these are great places to
explore. From the Science & History museums in London it’s even worth
checking out your local town museums. Our local one has an Egyptian mummy which
keeps the boys and their friends amused for hours!
Bike Rides.
Try a bike ride with a little difference.
Local estates and have farms often have open days for bike and families and it’s
a great way to explore new territory. Or why not head out somewhere new. The
New Forest has some great routes where you don’t need to access main roads!
Puddle Jumping.
If the worse happens and we have a wet
Easter that’s no reason not to head out. Puddles are the perfect place to waste
away some time and energy. Jumping up and down in muddle puddles and building
mud pies are a perfect way to spend your day. And if it’s a warm day why not
make a mud slide?!
Star Gazing.
Now is a perfect time to take the kids
out. Shove on your pj’s and maybe take a hot pizza with you and head out to
your nearest dark skies area and lay back and gaze. See if you can spot the
bigger dipper or Orions belt then have a look at the horizons and see if you
guess which glow comes from which local town.
