Flu remedies for winter

With the holiday season just days away – wahoo! – unfortunately now is also the time for many people to come down with flu and winter colds. While grabbing a hot lemsip and heading to bed is great sometimes that’s not so easy to do. Bathing Solutions asked me to share my top tips for the season so here we go….

Depending on the symptoms you might have a cold – sore throat, sneezing, coughing, congestion, or, if you have these symptoms with an added temp or headache, muscle aches, extreme fatigue, nausea etc you are more likely to have the flu.

Sore Throats

The most common symptom! One of my favourite home remedies for this is to gargle with salt water. Fill a mug with warm water and mix in a heaped teaspoon of salt and start gargling! It breaks down the catarrh and helps reduce inflammation.
While you’re doing this pop the kettle on and have a hot drink of hot water, orange juice and honey for the perfect curl up drink. If you can add a squeeze of lemon juice into the mixture as this also helps to cut down the bacteria and viruses.

Congestion.

The worse feeling as it also contributes to headaches and general UGHness. This is where actually relaxing becomes your friend. Have a hot steamy bath! If you can add in a couple of drops of essential oils. Tea tree oil will help a weak immune system, rosemary is great for coughing and thyme oil is also antibacterial and will help the respiratory infections! Chuck in a cup of fine sea salt and 4 drops of each for a bath before bed. Don’t stay in longer than 20minutes though or your skin will start to dry.

Prevention

Much better than cure! First and foremost, wash your hands. This is the biggest thing that you can do to prevent becoming unwell. Up your zinc intake at the first sign of a cold – but don’t take for more than a week as after that it starts to reduce your immunity! Get your rest. One of the reasons for a bad cold & flu is when you are run down and your body has no energy left to fight the infection.

Good luck over the winter and I do hope it’s a cold and flu free one. Check out Bathing Solutions for more tips and tricks to help combat the symptoms!
