5 Top Tips to Declutter

Has the “stuff” in your house double over Christmas? It seems to have here! We’ve decided this year we desperately need to declutter our house and start sorting everything. I’ve tried doing the “Sparks” joy decluttering where you hold an item to see if its sparks joy and sort stuff out rather than room by room but by subject IE all coats but unfortunately the spare room and play room need an awful lot of sorting before this can take place properly. So what are my top tips to simple decluttering? Well first make sure you’re in comfortable clothes, pop on some music and grab some snacks!

1, Three Boxes

First of all, make sure that you have three large cardboard boxes – maybe use the ones your Christmas presents arrived in? Mark them up – Keep, Dump, Charity.

2, Storage

Have storage to start with! Many modern homes are built with few cupboards and do real storage devices. Grab some storage crates for extra plates and bowels and cups and other kitchen equipment which is not used on a day to day basis. These can them be stored in a garage or shed and brought in as and when needed. Crates are also superb for decluttering hall cupboards and car boots! Easy to lift in and out and great for stacking on top of each other! Glass storage jars will often take up two bags of sugar or flour meaning that you end up with more space. Rather than half open bags everywhere. Also rice, pasta, flour and sugar all look great on a high bookcase or on a kitchen window sill!

3, DIY

A friend of mine has some great ways for decluttering her bedroom. Down the sides of the wardrobe her scarves are hung on curtain plastic covered wire. Much easier than trying to pop them on hangers and also it doesn’t take up crucial hanging space. A wire basket attached to her dressing table is out sight but holds in it her straightening irons and hair dryer.

4, Time Yourself

Decluttering is the most dispiriting thing you can possible think of. Getting the get up to go and do it when there are Christmas films on, toys to be played with and books read means that often we put it off. BUT pop on your timer for 15 minutes. Just 15 minutes of decluttering. Surprisingly you can get a tremendous amount done in 15 minutes and often this will encourage you to go on and do half an hour and then an hour!

5, Sell it

Those old DVDs & CD’s which are piling up in the corner? Those fabulous dresses which will no longer fit? Even those recipes books you no longer use? Well why not pop in on ebay, amazon or your local selling pages and get some money for them! Not only will you have more space but you’ll also have a little money in your pocket to spend on a night out!
