Haven: 11 Things to outdoors without a football

With the summer holidays hitting at the end of this week panic has set in among many parents I know of how to entertain their kids over the summer break. Well Haven has created a fabulous online pdf of 11things to do outdoors without a football.

Rather than being the ordinary selection some companies produce Haven have really bothered researching fun things to do. A great range including Kite Building and Perfume making also includes our favourite – Learning Morse Code. The boys couldn’t wait to start learning this. After all, all good spies apparently need to know Morse code and even better to use as so many people don’t know it! I do have a horrible suspicion that they might use it to tap out messages to their friends at school but what a fabulous code to learn. My husband apparently learnt it at school as it’s such a great skill.

We decided to have a good look at the print out during the day and practise what we were planning on doing that even. Rather than tapping it out we decided that we would use the torch in the dark and try flashing messages to each other. We decided that we couldn’t figure out just yet how to make a long tap so the torch seems by far the best suggestion. Of course with the late evenings we decided in the end to hide under the duvets or pull the curtains.

They each took a go at flashing out the messages to each other and writing it down with help from the code sheet. They must have spent a good hour for the past week on this activity and during the day they’ve been practising writing out codes to each other with pencil and paper. Its now a case of mummy studying it frantically to figure out the messages!

This has been such a great activity and I’m amazed by how much fun they have got out of this. They can’t wait to go camping with friends in a couple of weeks so they can flash codes to each other. I highly recommend downloading the PDF and having a copy or two lying around the house. A perfect boredom buster and a great way to spend time with your kids.
