Go Organic with Bed Guru

Bed Guru have recently launched a new organic mattress. Manufactured by using organic cotton and British wool it sounds incredible. With this in mind they have asked some bloggers to swap their chemical every day cleaning products for natural alternatives.
Now I couldn’t wait to try this out. Having watched a programme recently which stated how bad all these chemicals were to use around the home I signed up to Clean Mama blog who has a site full of alternatives. Bed Guru offered to send me out a kit and the Clean Mama book to get started.

I couldn’t wait. I decided that the best places to start where with the products I use on a daily basis; hand washing soap, kitchen cleaning and deep cleaning the oven. If I could swap these for natural alternatives which actually worked I would be rather chuffed.
So first up I needed to grab some castile soap and in the organic theme decided to go for super natural organic almond castile soap. This was pretty much the only product I needed to by. Bed Guru had sent me Bicarb Soda, vinegar and spray bottles in the kit and quite frankly I had a huge range of natural oils and who doesn’t have things like lemon and vinegar in the fridge?

1st up was the hand wash soap. It was made literally in seconds – it took less than minute. I added in natural antibacterial oils like tea tree but added in with lime and eucalyptus this made amazing creamy, lightly scented antibacterial soap. It was amazing and since we tried it at half term we haven’t actually bought any more hand wash since. Not only is it natural & organic it’s also saved us a lot of money! We added in Lego pieces to the boys soap and I don’t think I ever have to remind them now to wash their hands!

Next up reeling in success of the hand wash I made up general kitchen cleaner. The man of the house did not like the scent of the vinegar but even he stopped whinging when he realised that actually it and the lemon cut through the grease very quickly. I loved this cleaning spray but I didn’t like how quickly a bottle went off. Once made up it lasts for a week – presumably for the natural products but if you make a small enough bottle then it’s a great way to go. I have slipped a little with this and used a couple of other cleaners. Mainly for the water stains and for when I don’t have time for the lemon and vinegar to work and I want to do a quick whip round I have bought good old cleaning fluid.

Oven cleaner. My oven is awful. We inherited it with the house and well quite frankly it’s more than a little rank. I’ve used certain big brands to try and clean it but it still wasn’t working so I decided I’d give the bicarb and vinegar a go. It couldn’t hurt right?

Well I didn’t have a squeaky clean oven after but it was just as good as the big brand and it didn’t mean that we  had a kitchen that needed all the windows open for two hours having been full of chemicals. I’m doing a weekly deep clean of this now and have high hopes. I’ve seen a deeper clean when the bicarb of soda is made into a paste rather than be sprinkled on. Stayed tuned as I’ll update you if this works for me!
